SMA Course Offerings

Santa Monica Aviation offers the following flight training courses. Prices listed are for the minimum hours required for completion. Additional costs may be applicable if additional training is required.

Private Pilot, Single Engine

  • 40 hours of ground training/ 35 hours of flight training

Instrument Rating

  • 30 hours of ground training (20 hours for an additional instrument rating)/ 35 hours of flight training (15 for an additional instrument rating)

Commercial Pilot, Single Engine

  • 40 hours of ground training/ 10 hours of flight training

Commercial Pilot, Multi-Engine

  • 40 hours of ground training/ 10 hours of flight training

Endorsements & Checkouts: Catalina Island, Complex Endorsement, BFR, IPC
Refresher Course: For pilots who want to get back into flying

Enrollment Prerequisites

Santa Monica Aviation requires the following prerequisites to enrollment:

  • Be 16 years of age or older at the time of enrollment.
  • Hold a recreational pilot certificate, sport pilot certificate or student pilot medical certificate prior to enrolling in the flight portion of the private pilot course.
  • Be 17 years old prior to graduation from the private pilot course.
  • Be 18 years of age or older prior to graduation from the commercial pilot course.
  • Hold the following prior to enrolling in the flight portion of the commercial pilot certification course:
    - At least a private pilot certificate, and
    - An instrument rating certificate or be enrolled in an instrument rating course and pass the practical test prior to completing the commercial pilot certification course.
  • Read, speak and comprehend English proficiently.

Enrollment Steps

The following steps are required of each student for enrollment in flight training courses through Santa Monica Aviation:

  • Completed Santa Monica Aviation Flight Training Application Form, along with the following fees applicable to International Students only: a $250 application fee and $1,000 reservation fee applied towards the first class payment.
  • Submission of two forms of government issued identification, including one of the following:
    - Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
    - Original or government-issued birth certificate of the U.S., American Samoa, or Swains Island AND a government-issued picture ID
    - Original certificate of birth abroad with raised seal (Form FS-545 or DS-1350) AND a government-issued picture ID
    - Original certificate of U.S. citizenship with raised seal (Form N-560 or N-561) or a Certificate of Repatriation (Form N-581) AND government-issued pictured ID
    - Original U.S. Naturalization Certificate with raised seal (Form N-550 or N-570) AND a government-issued picture ID
  • Submission of any current pilot certifications or records of previous coursework completed.
  • For non-US citizens the following must also be obtained:
    - TSA authorization through the Alien Flight Student Program
    - Student Visa appropriate for flight training (Lawful Permanent Residents of the U.S. exempt)
  • A Student Pilot Medical Certificate.
